Golden Season in Mu Cang Chai

April in Mu Cang Chai means one thing: the rice terraces are turning gold. It's a short window — maybe two weeks — when the landscape transforms into a patchwork of amber and green.

I arrived just before sunrise, the mist still clinging to the valleys. As the sun rose, it painted the terraces in warm tones, each level catching the light differently. The Hmong farmers were already working in the fields, their silhouettes adding scale to the vast landscape.

The challenge here is composition. With so many lines and layers, it's easy to create a chaotic image. I focused on leading lines — using the curves of the terraces to draw the eye through the frame.

By midday, the light was harsh, so I spent the afternoon exploring the villages, photographing the daily life of the people who call this place home. Their connection to the land is something you can feel in every interaction.
